Wicked

In a scene that could have been conjured up by the mischievous Madame Morrible (the incomparable Maggie Kirkpatrick), Auckland’s glitterati braved the rain and thunder on Saturday night to see Wicked make its official New Zealand debut.

The much-loved musical based on Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel follows the journey of Elphaba (Jemma Rix) and Glinda (Suzie Mathers) before Dorothy arrived in Oz. After being blown together by the winds of chance, the unlikely pair form a friendship that sees them through the trials and tribulations of being ordinary and extraordinary teens at high school, and the unwelcome solicitations of the less than Wonderful Wizard of Oz (played by national treasure Jay Laga’aia). The story is a richly woven tapestry of love, friendship, and politics that revisits Frank Baum’s classic characters in ways few would have ever imagined. Set to music written by Academy award winner Stephen Schwartz, Wicked the musical is a true extravaganza of sight and sound.

Rix and Mathers shine in their interpretations of the roles made famous by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. With unsurpassable vocal clarity and comedic timing, the pair exceeded all my expectations and had the packed house spellbound. Jay Laga’aia made a welcome return to home soil, in a role that was ever more poignant given that it was only last year that he himself lamented the lack of ‘colour in Oz‘, having been written out of Australian soap Home and Away.

The show closed to thunderous applause and its fourth standing ovation following its success at three preview shows, proving that it is not one to be missed. So now it’s time to get swankified and show your gratitution for the most scandalacious musical of all time finally making it to our shores, go on, it’s Wicked
