The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Soundtrack)

perks of being a wallflower

Creating the soundtrack to the film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s cult classic The Perks of Being a Wallflower was always going to be a no-fail project, the story references Bowie, The Smiths, The Beatles and Pink Floyd just to name a few. So it should come as no surprise that this soundtrack is packed with classic tracks and is almost unbearably cool.

However, the album foregoes many of the rock staples featured in the novel (only The Smiths’ Asleep and Bowie’s We Could Be Heroes made the final cut) in favour of a riskier blend of alternative music. True, when you put New Order and Dexys Midnight Runners on the same playlist you are pretty much onto a guaranteed winner, but these tried and tested classics are balanced out with songs from XTC and the Cocteau Twins that add an element of much needed bite.

That’s not to say The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Soundtrack) is not without its flaws; Could it be Another Change? by The Samples, and Tugboat by Galaxie 500 occupy that terribly twee niche in alt pop that makes any sane person pray for death. Those tracks aside this is the kind of playlist one can usually only ever dream of putting together; so cool it hurts.
