Ellie Goulding: Halcyon

19 Oct

I will admit that it was with a certain level of foreboding that I launched myself into Halcyon. To my great surprise and delight I was completely and utterly converted.

Far from the strident, somewhat forced collaborations I had come to expect from Ellie Goulding (think Tinie Tempah’s Wonderman), Halcyon delivered a fluid and enjoyable listening experience, well-suited to the current trend in club-pop but with a distinctly dreamy and slightly eerie feel.

While at times the tracks on the album were similar enough to bleed into one another, on the whole Halcyon worked very well conceptually. Mixing on the album for the most part struck the right balance between fast-paced versus laid-back songs, and showcased Goulding’s considerable vocal talent across a range of musical environments. A great album, definitely worth a run through, or several, for existing fans and skeptics alike.
