EVENT Cinemas’ Action Sports Sessions Presents: First Love

27 Aug

I have to come clean and admit that I was more than a little reluctant to review Claire Gorman’s First Love, given that it combines two of my biggest pet peeves: sports and teenage girls. I can say with utmost sincerity, that First Love totally turned my expectations upside down. In a world where young women grow up too fast, wear too much makeup, and document every superficial moment of their lives in duck-lipped photos for Facebook, First Love is a welcome breath of fresh air.

The film follows three young women who are best friends living in the harsh climes of Phillip Island as they talk about their love of surfing. Along the way they face injury, separation, and illness but remain upbeat and passionate throughout. It is so refreshing to see a film targeted at teenage girls absent of unhealthy body images, cattiness and crushes, that promotes worthy role models and goal directed behaviour. I may be out of touch, but these values are hard to come by in contemporary teen cinema. If you are looking after a teen or tween these holidays and are stuck for ideas for something to do that wont break the bank First Love is well worth the ticket price, and like me, you may end up enjoying yourself too.
