The Smashing Pumkins: Pisces Iscariot (2012 Reissue)

18 Jul

I am generally dubious about B-sides and rarities albums. Too often they are lazy cash cows for tapped out artists, but Pisces Iscariot is the glittering exception to the rule. Comprised of B-sides and outtakes from the late 80s and early 90s, Pisces Iscariot showcases all the finest facets of the Smashing Pumpkins’ music. Sweetly melancholic songs such as ‘Soothe’ sit harmoniously alongside strident rock pomp to create an album that is remarkably balanced for such an endeavour, and classically Pumpkins in sound. It is little wonder Pisces Iscariot has risen well above its compilation rank since its first release in 1994, to become a Smashing Pumpkins staple. Now that the album has been remastered for 2012 and fattened out with a bonus disc of extra outtakes, live recordings and remixes there is no better time to replace your well worn copy or augment your collection with arguably some of the Pumpkins’ most elegant and intelligent work.
